Friends of Hook Norton Community Library
“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” The words of Cicero in the first century BC might be applied to life in Hook Norton today. I wonder how many of us realise how lucky we are to live within walking distance of a public library, which provides so many services for our community.
FOHNCL exists to ensure that we keep our library going. And despite threats of closure over the years, we are succeeding in doing just that. Not only is it still open, it is positively thriving. At our recent AGM in September, it was reported that there has been a 10% increase in visits since 2014, and a 29% increase in visits from children. Book loans are up, and 109 children completed the Summer Reading Challenge this year – proof, I hope, that books are not going out of fashion.
Much of this success is due to our wonderful Library Manager, Karen Seymour. But, FOHNCL also plays a major role, providing a share of staff funding to OCC, as well as spending money on extra books and other resources. We organise the volunteers who are essential to assist Karen, and we run the very successful Tea at the Library on the third Wednesday of every month from 3pm.
FOHNCL raises most of its money from two sources – subscriptions from our members and fund raising at our annual Book and Plant Sale in May. If you would like to join us to show your support, you can pick up a membership form from the Library, or contact Sue Ditchfield on 737604 or firstname.lastname@example.org. It costs £10 for an individual or £15 for a family to join. A small price to pay for having such a wonderful resource right on your doorstep.
