Girlguiding UK is the UK’s largest voluntary youth organisation, with around 580,000 members. 

The organisation, which runs Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section, is part of a worldwide 

Movement that enables girls and young women, whatever their background or ability, to realise their full potential 

and take an active and responsible role in today’s society. 

This is achieved through a distinctive, stimulating and enjoyable programme of activities provided by 60,000 

trained adult volunteer Leaders.

Girlguiding UK is committed to developing skills and self confidence of girls and women. 

Adult Leaders receive excellent training and gain transferable skills they can use in the workplace due to the wide range

of roles and opportunities available in guiding. Girlguiding UK seeks to work in partnership with other individuals and 

organisations who share our Vision. 

Guiding provides opportunities for girls and young women to:

• Be challenged by new experiences and achieve a sense of pride in accomplishment.
• Think for themselves and make decisions.
• Undertake teamwork and acquire leadership skills. 
• Acquire self-awareness, self-respect and self-confidence.
• Develop personal values which give their lives meaning and direction.
• Do their best according to their abilities.
• Seek spiritual development.
• Contribute to society.
• Live by a simple code - the Guide Law.
 
In addition, Guiding offers a girl-only space. This means that girls and young women, who may have less self-esteem and self-confidence than boys, are able to assert themselves, make decisions, take on positions of responsibility and work in 

teams in an environment which best suits them.
In Hook Norton we are fortunate to have Guiding Units for all ages

The Rainbow Unit takes girls from age 5 – 7 and names are accepted on the waiting list at the age of 4.  

They meet on a Monday night from 4 – 5pm.

The 2 Brownie Units take girls from age 7 – 10 and names are accepted on the waiting list at the age of 6.  

One meets on Mondays and the other on Tuesdays from 5 – 6.30pm.

The Guide Unit takes girls from the age of 10 – 14 and names are accepted on the waiting list at the age of 9.  

They meet on Monday nights from 7 – 9pm.

The Senior Section takes girls from the age of 14 – 25.  They meet on Wednesday nights from 7 – 9pm.

Helpers are vital to guiding. Girlguiding UK has recommended ratios of adults to children, dependent on the 

age group, so it is vital that units have committed helpers. For example, one additional Unit Helper for a 

Brownie unit can mean that up to eight more girls can join.  

If you can help on a regular basis, once a week or fortnight, you could become a Unit Helper, assisting the unit 

Leader.  It's your chance to get stuck into a wide range of games and activities enjoyed by the girls.  

Maybe you are qualified to drive a minibus. Help in transporting girls and/or equipment ensures that more 

activities can happen in different places – from an evening at the swimming pool to a residential trip.

Girlguiding UK enables girls and young women to develop their potential and to make a difference to the world.
