Every year, Hook Norton Film Society screens 14 films on Saturday nights in the Memorial Hall, Chapel Street between September and May. Each film is preceded by a candlelit supper cooked by members. We have two pot luck supper evenings where all members provide a dish and a Charity Night when members pay to raise funds for worthwhile causes. Doors open at 6.45pm for refreshments and the film starts at approximately 8pm. We provide comfortable seats, surround sound and good sightlines to a large screen. Programmes and membership forms are available from the library, village shop and post office.
Our aim each season is to show exceptional filmswhich represent a range of genres, countries and decades. Additionally, our seasons include a silent film with live piano accompaniment and a special screening of two or more films with related theme or content. Hook Norton Film Society is a member of the British Federation of Film Societies.
This years programme includes a number of films that have achieved distinction fairly recently. The delightful Love Like Poison from France was a Cannes prize winner whilst the Russian, How I Ended This Summer won Best Film Award at last years London Film Festival. Benda Bilili! is an exhilarating documentary about a group of homeless, paraplegic buskers from Kinshasa who rocketed to international success. And the season begins with Sugar a highly praised film about a 19 year old boy from the Dominican Republic who is signed up to play baseball for Kansas City.
World War 2 is the theme for a special screening of two films on February 4th. In the afternoon were showing the 1942 propaganda fiction Went the Day Well in which a charming English village is invaded by Nazi paratroopers. In the evening you can see the legendary 1946 Powell/Pressburger film, A Matter of Life and Death starring David Niven.
